PRESS RELEASE THURSDAY FEBRUARY 13th, 2003

New education programme for racing industry: Darley announces ground-breaking Flying Start course

A new and unique training course, called Flying Start, is being established by Darley, one of the world’s largest and most adventurous studs, to prepare students for high- level careers in breeding or racing. The programme, which will culminate with the Flying Start Diploma, will take two years to complete, with the Flying Start students living and learning in Newmarket in Britain, Co Kildare in Ireland, Kentucky in the US, Dubai and the Hunter Valley in Australia.

Darley director Joe Osborne and Diana Cooper have worked with many of the bloodstock industry’s leading figures to develop the programme, which begins in August. It will have an initial intake of eight, and applications are being invited from around the world.

John Ferguson, Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor, said, ‘Sheikh Mohammed is utterly convinced of the power and necessity of top-class education in all walks of life. To thrive, the world’s racing and bloodstock businesses require professionals of the highest calibre. We hope that Flying Start will be able to fast- track those with the passion and commitment to get to the top of what is a demanding but hugely rewarding industry. The global racing economy is massive, and its future complex. It is Sheikh Mohammed’s firm belief that education will enable the next generation of industry leaders to excel themselves and so help the sport he loves.’
